Work Review

Onwards with a new role

Matt Cornock Personal Blog Post

On Monday I start a new role in the Elearning Development Team at the University of York as Lecture Capture Coordinator and Elearning Advisor. As such, my last day within the Department of Social Policy and Social Work as their Web & VLE Coordinator was yesterday and by happy coincidence this was the same day I officially received my Vice-Chancellor’s Teaching Award at our students’ graduation ceremony (photo with my former HoD).

It’s been great to work within SPSW for ten years, starting at the lowly levels of vacation work converting PDFs to Word documents for accessibility to then developing the way technology was used to support our face-to-face programmes and creating a multi-media web presence. I’ve learnt a lot and I’ve found a career direction that challenges and stimulates. I’ve always had an interest in technology, taking apart all sorts of things when I was younger, and I’ve always had an interest in education and how we learn. Being able to combine the two and more importantly understand and unpick the relationships between technology and learning in modern education, helps us to ensure that learning activities and uses of technology are meaningful. One of my driving aims is to break down the barriers that exist with technology seen as an ‘add-on’ or a novelty. The use of technology must be embedded within education, in the same way it has permeated every-day life, with relevance, facility and I suppose entertainment as well.

I look forward to working with new colleagues across the institution and hope to explore and contribute to the way lecture capture is used as a learning tool by our students and others who have the opportunity to access such a system. Expect to see my reflections on this over the next few months!
